We kickstarted FSC Forest Week 2023, themed “Trust the Tree” with a presentation at Tetra Pak Malaysia’s Green Day for staff, focused on sustainable sourcing.

Sunway Group had also kindly supported FSC Forest Week 2023 by featuring videos about sustainable forest management and FSC by Blackpink, Jisoo and Treasure – artists of YG Entertainment who is an FSC Promotional Licence Holder, at Sunway Pyramid, Sunway Velocity and Sunway Carnival. And last but not least, through an event organised by Kimberly-Clark Malaysia, we spent the last day of FSC Forest Week 2023 appreciating and celebrating nature and forests in the beautiful Taman Tugu, Kuala Lumpur (an urban forest park).

From a forest walk, learning about the importance of forests in addressing climate change, protecting biodiversity and providing vital ecosystem services that are essential to all lives on earth,

… to a hands-on planting workshop and learning about water and the crucial role of forests in providing clean water.

… to a better understanding of how FSC has dedicated the past three decades to providing solutions to forest managers, smallholders, businesses and consumers in ensuring healthy, resilient Forests For All Forever.

We had two wonderful opportunities to present about FSC, the work that we do to promote sustainable forest management, how FSC contributes to addressing climate change and biodiversity loss issues, our role in the new EUDR and the role of sustainable finance in supporting sustainable forest management.

1. JC3 Journey to Zero Conference 2023

FSC Malaysia’s Country Director was invited by the Joint Committee on Climate Change (JC3) to speak at the JC3 Journey to Zero Conference 2023 on 23-25 October 2023 at Sasana Kijang, Kuala Lumpur. We shared about the work of FSC and its link to sustainable finance, at a Thematic Breakout Session on Sustainable Forestry alongside speakers:

• Allen Lian (Responsible Forestry Manager, WWF Malaysia)
• Geoffrey Seeto (Managing Director, New Forests, Singapore)
• Datuk Jeffri Abd Rasid (Chief Executive Officer, Malaysia Forest Fund)
• Moderator: Perpetua George (Managing Director, Biodiversity Lead – Asia Pacific Sustainability, PwC Malaysia).

The JC3 is a platform established in September 2019 to pursue collaborative actions for building climate resilience within the Malaysian financial sector. The JC3 is co-chaired by Datuk Jessica Chew Cheng Lian, Deputy Governor of Bank Negara Malaysia and Datuk Kamarudin Hashim, Managing Director of Securities Commission Malaysia, with members comprising senior officials from Bursa Malaysia and 21 financial industry players. 

2. National Green Furniture Symposium 2023

FSC Malaysia’s Country Director presented “Woodworking Sustainably with FSC” at the The National Green Furniture Symposium 2023 themed “Sustaining the Industry Towards a Circular Economy”, which was organised by the Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) in collaboration with the Malaysian Timber Industry Board (MTIB). One of the key messages is that sustainable timber (sourced from sustainably managed forests) is one of the imperative solutions to a low-carbon economy.

Held in Vilnius, Lithuania this year, our annual FMC meet-up was rewarding, filled with knowledge exchange and experiences. We visited an FSC-certified forest and an FSC certificate holder’s wood processing facilities, fostering camaraderie among FSC colleagues from over 30 countries. Gratitude to our colleagues, Alba Solis and Aidas Pivoriūnas for their exceptional organisation and planning of the meeting!
